Markets:
TONALA WEEKLY ARTESANÍAS
Thursday and Sunday open air street markets regularly have more than 30
blocks of stalls featuring everything under the sun, with emphasis on
clay, wood and glass products handcrafted in Tonala for export. A few
stalls have artificial Christmas trees, some decorations and wrappings.
TONALA NACIMIENTO (NATIVITY SCENE)
Regular Thursday and Sunday markets are extended by early October to include
10-12 blocks of stalls selling figures, buildings, foliage and accessories
for nativity scenes.
PARQUE MORELOS
Stalls set up in the park along Independencia in the historic area of
downtown Guadalajara sell glass balls, garlands, lights, ornaments, wrappings
and other holiday decorations.
GUADALUPE CIRCLE OF CHAPALITA
Venders set up to sell live trees, decorations, wrapping paper, ribbons,
and gifts.
CALZ. LAZARO CARDENAS
In the median of the street near Gran Plaza. Live trees, decorations,
gifts, toys, paper, and ribbons. This is a very popular temporary open-air
market.
TIANGUIS DE NAVIDAD
Located a couple blocks south of the historic area of downtown Guadalajara,
this is the oldest of the open-air special markets for Christmas. Located
on Pedro Madero between 16th de September and Independencia.
Mercados:
MERCADO LIBERTAD (SAN JUAN DE DIOS)
Located at Calzada Independencia and Av. Juarez in the downtown historic
area. This is one of the largest indoor markets in Latin America. The
site of this huge building was an indigenous marketplace long before the
arrival of the Spanish. In addition to the usual vast assortment of gifts
and daily goods, Christmas decorations and Nativity pieces are featured
in the vast inventory.
Tonala - Regular Shops
The artesanías village of Tonala has long been famous for the ceramics
produced there. While most visitors visit the street markets, a second
day in the village just to explore the shops is warranted.
Tlaquepaque
More upscale than Tonala, Tlaquepaque boutiques and stores are always
a joy to visit. They are filled with interesting and unusual gift and
home items from throughout Mexico. The perfect spot for lunch or shopped-out
husbands is the Parian, the grand plaza square, divided into 14 separate
restaurants, and filled with wandering Mariachi groups.
