Why doesn’t the HEV suit have a helmet?

I think both of Gordon’s HEV suits do not have a physical helmet, but instead, they generate an invisible forcefield around the head to protect it. That would explain why Gordon survived all the bad things back in Black Mesa and after that, the whole Combine “search and destroy” thing.
