How many Vanier scholarships are there?
Up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually 1; A total of up to 500 scholarships are active at any time.
How do you become a Vanier Scholar?
To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:
- be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota 1;
- be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component).

Your Chances: Each Faculty / Institute gets an OGS quota, and based on the number of eligible applications from last year, your success rate at the Institute of the Environment is somewhere around 33%. Those chances are way better than buying a lottery ticket, so be sure to apply!
How much is OGS?
The value of the OGS is $5,000 per session. Thus, awardees may receive $10,000 for two consecutive sessions or $15,000 for three consecutive sessions. In all instances, the awarding graduate unit will contribute to one-third the cost of the total award received by the students.
What was Vanier before?
For this reason, the name was changed from Eastview to Vanier, in honour of the first French-Canadian Governor General, Georges-Philéas Vanier.
